Biography
For over 20 years as an Associate Professor since 2011 Dr. Mahmood was recognized internationally for his studies on environmental remediation of metals, dyes as well as organic contaminants. Indeed data arising from these investigations resulted in the invitation to serve as a consultant on projects dealing with wastewater treatment, and biofuels production from various biomasses (bioenergy), a key element required for sustainability and resourcefulness for Pakistan`s future to become self-sufficient. Dr.
Mahmood continues to be involved in studies on anaerobic treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters through processes involving denitrification, and related nitrogen removal. Dr. Mahmood has until the present day contributed significantly in a distinct scientific area by publishing 313 research articles in world's best journals who have been cited 16000 times (H index of 69). It is crucial to understand the consequent adverse effects of organic contaminants and toxic metals in domestic and industrial wastewaters and the process of bioremediation for the human population of Pakistan and ecosystem. The survival of humans and the environment is dependent on usable water but is a limited resource that needs to be protected and maintained by remediation, a phenomenon clearly recognized by Dr. Mahmood.
The biological relevance and significance of his findings has resulted in continuous funding from various agencies and publication of data in peer-reviewed prestigious scientific journals with high impact factors. An important index especially in academia is the capacity to train undergraduate and graduate students to which Dr. Mahmood has dedicated his efforts. Dr. Mahmood has excelled at both the scientific quality (impact factor) and number of papers, published in peer-reviewed prestigious scientific
international journals. Dr.Mahmood maintains a reputation as a renowned scientist through service as an editor of several journals, membership of several scientific societies, requests for services as an external expert referee for journals, ad hoc membership on various granting agency committees and author of several books and book chapters. In addition to his scientific accomplishments Dr.Mahmood has excelled in medical education. Indeed Dr. Mahmood was awarded the Best University Teacher by the Higher Education Commission, Medal of Excellence in Environmental Sciences by President of Pakistan in 2011 and received a Fulbright Post-Doctoral Award. Recently, he has been approved as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy of UK.
