PROGRAM LEVEL

The rapidly growing public awareness of environmental protection, chemical safety, and evolving regulatory policies is driving the demand for highly qualified professionals who can understand the scientific basis of environmental challenges and develop innovative, sustainable solutions. Furthermore, the industrial sector increasingly requires specialists who can propose creative approaches while minimizing adverse environmental impacts.

The Master of Science in Environmental Chemistry program has been designed to meet societal and industrial needs by producing competent graduates equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge and practical expertise. The program aims to enhance students’ ability to address complex environmental issues and to contribute effectively to the labor market in the Kingdom of Bahrain or in respective country of the graduated candidates.

Over the duration of this two-year program, students will develop the knowledge, technical skills, and research experience required to tackle global environmental chemical challenges. The curriculum adopts an application-oriented and strongly interdisciplinary approach, integrating theoretical foundations with practical problem-solving.

The program encompasses five major research areas that represent key domains of Environmental Chemistry:

  1. Water Purification and Wastewater Treatment
  2. Air pollution and its Control
  3. Treatment of management of Waste
  4. Nanomaterials for Environmental Applications
  5. Environmentally Friendly and Green Products

The curriculum has been carefully structured to align with current industrial needs and technological development. The program has been developed in collaboration with leading researchers and industry experts, ensuring relevance and quality. The program consists of 33 credit hours of graduate coursework along with a research project (thesis). Students will have the opportunity to conduct their research projects in a dynamic and advanced environment, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment to achieve their academic and professional objectives. Graduates of this program will be internationally competent and well-prepared for a wide range of career opportunities in government institutions, environmental regulatory agencies, consultancy firms, and industrial sectors within the Kingdom of Bahrain and beyond.

Recently, the Master of Science in in Environmental Chemistry was developed and placed at level 9 in the National Qualifications Framework in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2025.
