ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Biology was founded in 1978 and is considered one of the earliest departments at the University of Bahrain. The Department of Biology is particularly appealing to students in the College of Science for multiple reasons, including its wide range of study options that allow students to explore diverse interests within the life sciences, from molecular biology to ecology. Additionally, it offers practical experiences, various career paths, and abundant research opportunities in fields such as biotechnology, microbiology, ecology, marine biology, bioinformatics, botany, zoology, virology, food analysis, and nutrition. In 2024, the Department of Biology had a total enrollment of 1,016 undergraduate students and 30 postgraduate students. Currently, there are 13 full-time faculty members, four teaching and research assistants, and eight administrative staff, along with several part-time academic collaborators.

The Department of Biology has 17 faculty members. The Department of Biology has an active research faculty. Faculty members conduct research in the areas of biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biodiversity and sustainable development, cellular biology, clinical nutrition, conservation biology, environmental assessment, ecological assessment, environmental quality monitoring, food composition and food analysis, health promotion and disease prevention, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, nutritional epidemiology, plant microbe interaction, marine molecular biology, marine environmental biology, plant physiology, virology, and zoology.
